Types of Natural Stone
Stone floor tile is quickly installed using grout and basic tools. There are four types that make up most natural stone flooring:
- Granite: Granite can be used as flooring tile in private homes. It is most often found in commercial or public facilities. This flooring does not scratch or stain easily. It is highly resistant to damage from heavy foot traffic and dirt. It is also resistant to flames and freezing. This floor covering is available in hundreds of different colors. No two slabs are ever alike. When polished, granite provides an almost reflective surface to your flooring. Granite tile makes an excellent indoor tile, but really impresses more as an outdoor tile for patios and surrounding pool areas.
- Marble: There are 17 different types of marble used for floor tiles and other construction or home improvement products. Nothing else polishes to such a high shine as marble which is why it is so popular in kitchens, entryways and other show areas in a home. In public buildings such as corporate headquarters and government offices, an entryway of Italian or Spanish Marble makes for an unforgettable first impression to clients and visitors.
- Slate: Slate is probably the most versatile of natural stone flooring. It is more easily cut and shaped than granite or marble. It is sold with the back of each tile already scored for easy installation. Slate is nearly as durable as marble but still much cheaper when properly sealed. Its biggest drawback to being used as an outdoor tile is that it becomes very slick with rain. That’s also why it is popular as a roofing tile. However, if the outdoor area is being designed for decoration rather than entertainment then slate flooring tile is an excellent choice.
- Travertine: Travertine is a limestone that is commonly used today as outdoor flooring tiles in patios and garden stepping stones. Travertine was mined for use in everything from bathhouses to the Colosseum itself in ancient Rome. Being a much softer stone then granite, marble or slate, travertine does not finish or polish very well compared to them. It is not a naturally smooth surface either, so many stores and installers use grout to reduce or cover the holes and bumps. For many people though, the “rough” exterior makes it visually ideal for outdoor projects.
